This picture was taken in Rome. Rome was the last stop on our trip to Italy. I'll get to that on a later post. We left from Salt Lake City on Thursday the 26th and arrived in Venice on Friday around noon. We then borded a water taxi that took us to St. marks square. Got off the taxi and had to drag our luggage through the square to our hotel. The hotel was about a 30 second walk from the square but it was on the other side of the sq. from where the taxi could drop us off. It took about 10 minutes to walk there. But since we didn't really have a good idea where the hotel was we spent about 30 minutes searching for it. Eventually I asked someone and they lead me in the correct direction. I found it first. I was ver proud of myself. Our Hotels name was Hotel Diana. It was the neatest hotel. The street/ally that it was down was no bigger than a doorway. Just imagine walking through a doorway sized street with 5 story building crouding you. it was so cool. this hotel was by far in the coolest location. Every morning we woke to the bells of St. marks basilica. and birds cooing.
The first day we were there was brutal. Having to deal with jet lag is not fun. especially if one of the travelers is a baby. But we powered through and didn't let ourselves or audrey have a nap that day. We went inside the basilica and right when i got to st. marks tomb, in the very back of the basilica might i add, Audrey decided that she did not want to be there and that she did not want here mom there and started crying and crying. Wow was she loud and it echoed so much. so i just had to book it out of the there. I didn't have a chance to look at all the mosaics on the walls. it was sad and we never had the chance to see it again. I missed the basilica it was sad. So did patrick he couldn't go in because of his back pack. and i would have held it and let him go back in but audrey was hungery and so we had to go back to the hotel and feed her. Great Grandma cannon decided that the plane and the adventure at st. marks was enough and need to rest at the hotel too so we left audrey with her .
We spent the remainder of the first day exploring the city. This was when we got lost for 2 hours. We had to have walked over 7 miles trying to find our way back. we ended coming to the islands edge and could see the airport. we knew then that we were on the wrong side of the city. it was really cool to walk around and see the families all play in the open areas and watch the kid play soccer. some of the homes were so beautiful. some over a thousand years old and still standing.
Venice was by far my favorite city because it actually felt like you were somewhere different. Florance and Rome just felt like New York City with italians. But Venice was new and different. No cars, No bikes just people walking everywhere. It was just so interesting to imagine that people live here. that they go day to day in this city just seems so exoctic and romantic. I would love to live there.
We never had to chance to take a gondola ride. they were about 80 euro for an hour. We decided to eat instead. The food in Veniece was actually my favorite there was a resturant right by our hotel and i would have to say that it was the best food the entire trip. they had this eggplant lasagna that was to die for.
I could spend a lifetime telling you about our venice trip and i just might. but i have to go now. I'll let you know more later.
